CURRENT SERIES

Have you ever performed an outlandish act of devotion-to God or anyone or anything else? When was the last time you took a risk? When was the last time you did something routine (cut the grass, do the laundry, etc…) with an eye to excellence? When was the last time you overcame obstacles or opposition because you believed the cause was bigger than your own personal comfort.
The Bible is full of such stories: Mary who anointed Jesus with an entire container of perfume worth one year’s wages; Jeremiah’s purchase of a piece of family property on the eve of Jerusalem’s destruction; Paul picking himself off the ground and pressing on after having been stoned and left for dead outside the city of Lystra and the list could go on.
Can you relate to those stories or, if you were honest, admit that it is hard to imagine a life beyond the routine you are experience now? What is the difference between us and those in the Bible who were just as human than we are? I think it can be boiled down to this- those who performed such heroic deeds were convinced they were a part of something much bigger than themselves, that their actions actually made a difference that would ring through eternity, and that God in some manner had spoken to them. In short they believed they had been summoned by God to a life of meaning, purpose and significance.
Over the next few weeks we are going to learn that this kind of life is available to anyone who will answer God’s summons to hear and follow. It is not reserved for the great or heroic, it is reserved for all who will whole heartedly follow Jesus.
